Families,
Please use these questions to help you discuss the video you watched. What came up for you and your child? Post comments below. -Miss Labat Episode 4: Take-home questions We’re watching a video series about how students can develop a growth mindset! Watch it at: www.classdojo.com/BigIdeas, and ask your child these questions tonight. 1. What part of the brain did you learn about today? 2. What did you do today to make connections between your neurons? 3. What is one big challenge you've faced that has helped grow your brain? What’s a new challenge you want to tackle now? From: ClassDojo Carol Dweck is a psychologist working out of Stanford University. She researches achievement and motivation. She has put forth a theory about the mindsets of successful people. In her theory she describes the growth mindset vs. the fixed mindset. She proposes that people with a fixed mindset believe that intelligence is fixed. This means that their is only so far they can go, they see mistakes as evidence that they are not smart, and putting in effort is fruitless. On the other hand, people with a growth mindset, she asserts, embrace a challenge, see mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow, and believe the sky is the limit for what they can achieve. Of course, fostering a growth mindset is important for anyone. And of course, explaining this to children is a challenge!
I was so thrilled when Class Dojo came out with a video series that explains growth mindset theory in kid-friendly terms. Above is the first video in the series which we watched and discussed as a group. I encourage you to watch it and talk about it with your kiddos! Feel free to make comments or ask questions in the comments section below. Enjoy! We read the book Thank you, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco today. Students are working to identify character motivations and how they lend to a story's plot. We had a great class discussion about this story today. Tomorrow we will be answering some text dependent questions together. Enjoy!
For videos of other books we have read as part of our unit, see the Literature Link tab on the right side of this page. The students and I are really enjoying Class Dojo! In case you missed it, Class Dojo is a free app that can be downloaded (to phone, tablet, desktop, etc.) and used to track student progress in class. I can give individual points to students for being on task, working hard, perseverance, teamwork and more. Points can be taken away for being off task, shouting out, and so on. I can also award whole class points. The beauty of it is that parents can log in at any time to see how students are doing that day. Another very useful feature is that I can send and receive messages between individual parents or send whole class broadcasts that all parents can see. Students can create their own accounts to view at home as well. I can print out weekly reports that show a pie chart of student strengths and areas for improvement.
If you haven't checked it out yet, please do! It is a fantastic place to keep tabs on your students as well as stay in the loop. When everyone is signed up, I will use it to send out reminders. If you need your student code again, please let me know and I will print and send you another copy! If you haven't yet, please sign up today! |
